We aim to develop a novel orthosis for children with cerebral palsy. The orthosis will self-optimize its motor controllers to provide gait that is safe, and similar to able-bodied gait. Self-optimization will be achieved with particle swarm optimization, an intelligent system based on the flocking behavior of birds. The orthosis will serve as a surrogate therapist to continuously normalize the child’s gait. The orthosis frame will be customized and 3D-printed for each individual child. The orthosis will enhance mobility, increase self-esteem, and improve overall health. The technology will ultimately be transferred to Parker Hannifin Corporation for manufacture and commercialization.
